With Rick Miller from Southern Culture On the Skids at the boards, you might expect Dark Snack to be more bang ’n’ twang than rock ’n’ roll. Instead, Melissa Swingle and Laura King deliver flat-out garage rock complete with squealing feedback and mercilessly bent guitar strings. With a bit of tambourine and harmonica to take the edge off, The Moaners transplant the British indie-rock sound of ’90s band Th Faith Healers to the present day indie-roots hotbed of Chapel Hill. Turning up the reverb, they manage to do it in style.
