OUTRAGEOUS CHERRY
Our Love Will Change the World
Rainbow Quartz

· Detroit popsters follow up a pretty good EP with a pretty good EP spread out over an average full-length album.

Starting strong with the bouncy march of "Pretty Girls Go Insane" (with horn arrangements and harmonica no less), Outrageous Cherry seem poised to make a strong start to their second decade of making music. But the album quickly nosedives into warbled psychedelia that almost buries the best elements of their pop.

The band is certainly able to maintain a much needed element of urgency in their music, but the best material on Our Love Will Change the World was even more impressive when it was unfettered by filler on the preview EP they released in late 2004. Matthew Smith fronts the band with a sweet voice and even sweeter resumé (he has played with several Detroit hipsters, including Warren DeFever from His Name is Alive), but even at 37 minutes the album proves to be too much of the same. If you think that Sloan got better when they stopped rocking, then this album is for you, but otherwise approach Outrageous Cherry with caution – they’re better in small doses.

3/5
