U.S. in Iraq nothing to dance about
Re: "All about George a curious viewpoint," by Tim Wiebe, Letters to the Editor, Feb. 3-9, 2005

Wiebe's "joy" at CNN's images of "Iraqis dancing in the streets... free to vote for the first time" is saddening. Does Wiebe truly believe that Iraqis are "free to elect their own leaders" in that American-controlled country? Hell, the American people themselves are subject to such questionable activities during their own elections that it remains unclear just how free they are to elect their own leaders.

Supporting the invasion of a nation to rid its good people of a dictator, one who was aided through his bloodiest killing years by these same murderous "liberators," is an obscenity. An obscenity that is equalled by the likes of deadly sanctions and "aid for oil" programs so harsh that they had the stench of genocide. Wiebe's joy is based upon these obscenities.

As Canadians, let us take no joy from treacherous lies about weapons of mass destruction. Let us find no joy in the destruction of a culture, nor in the polluting of its environment. Let us proclaim that if U.S. corporate interests could not be served in Iraq, its savagely ignorant occupiers would not be so eager to spread their love.

Wiebe has no idea where this folly in Iraq is taking the U.S., and yet, like a typical conservative, wannabe American, is willing to go along for the joy ride, perhaps with the belief that we'll be thrown a juicy bone from the dung heap called Iraqi Freedom.

Canada's position on Iraq is admirable, and is embraced by most countries. We are proving ourselves a strong nation, one that need not endear itself to such a flabby narcissist as the United States' political body. Let us protect ourselves against narrow-minded, bigoted conservative views by celebrating those Canadians that are most responsible for our envied stature among the citizenry of the planet, like Naomi Klein, Mel Hurtig, Maude Barlow and Stephen Lewis. There, you will find a source of joy.

Bill Anderson,
