THE BEES
Free the Bees
Virgin

· Bee me up, Scotty! After a year on the shelves overseas, this Isle of Wight outfit is ready to launch in North America.

Free the Bees is unapologetically cut from the cloth of the ’60s. The absolute genius lies in its devout simplicity – make a rock ’n’ roll album that is both danceable and fun. Toss in a couple of disparate elements and ’60s influences (notably soul and funk) and you’ve cooked up a honey – a sound that is as much homage to the pre-wank phases of classic rock as it is a path away from the contemporary shoegazin’, electro poppin’, mopey cock-rockin’ maelstrom.

While quite surprisingly both fresh and familiar, The Bees proudly raise a middle finger to the dearth of commodity culture that chokes the shelves of your local CD emporium. It’s much more than a throwback.

For the time being, it’s a revitalizing move forward into an oasis of music that soothes and moves.
