LATIGO
The Drifter
Independent
· Singer-guitar player Perry Jacobson was head wrangler of Banff National Park before he retired. No wonder this music has such an authentic campfire song aura to it.
The trio Latigo plays with acoustic instruments that, with the exception of stand-up bass, could all swing from the saddle strings on a trail ride. At their recent gig at Ironwood, fiddlers, singers and cowboy poets joined them in a community effort reminiscent of the spirited barn-raising parties settlers once enjoyed round these parts.
Even without a barn in sight, they nearly raised the roof as they lifted harmonies in songs about Ya Ha Tinda (the horse ranch near the Banff National Park that is the end of every mounted rangers journey there), bronc rider Tom Threepersons and celebrity horses like Cyclone. The music might rollick with the rhythm of a lope along the trail or smooth out with the wistful lilt of the wind that rains pine needles onto your saddle blanket. Either way, it opens up and invites all the mountain and sky Alberta can hold. A great album for those who need to be reminded of the true meaning of Stampede.
