| "Bud, Kokanee, Coors Light and Canadian," is the typical response when I ask what beers are available at any of Calgary's many festival beer gardens. I realize that beer is an afterthought, which takes a rightful backseat to the music, crafts, sports or dancing, as the case may be, at most festivals, but there is one beer garden where Calgarians can enjoy both festivities and beer without compromise.
The Fourth Street Lilac Festival has at various times been voted Best Festival and Best Free Event by Fast Forward readers. Fortunately for beer lovers, it also hosts Calgary's best beer garden.
In the parking lot beside Wildwood Grill and Brewing Company, festivalgoers will find reprieve from the throngs, a good band and even a place to relieve the bladder. But most importantly, they will find food that is head and shoulders above the usual beer garden burger or hot dog, along with beer that is head, shoulders, chest, waist, hips, legs and ankles above the usual beer garden offerings. On a hot, sunny day, either of Wildwood's own Chek Pilsner or Wild Wheat is like drinking sunshine. |
