THE DEADLY SNAKES
Porcella
Paper Bag

· The best band in Toronto matures to perfection.

We should have expected this. When The Deadly Snakes released their first album, Love Undone, they were full of all the good times and fearlessness that comes with youth. On each album since, they’ve grown as musicians and as human beings. Now, on their fourth album, Porcella (named after an ancient term the Romans used when they declared pig flesh was fit to eat), the boys still strut and rock ("Sissy Blues," "The Banquet"), but these songs of consumption and its aftermath delve deeper lyrically and musically than any Snakes song before. Keyboard player Age Of Danger’s album closer, "A Bird in the Hand (Is Worthless)," is a delicate folk song that may leave tears in your eyes. That’s if you haven’t already programmed your CD player to repeat "Oh Lord, My Heart" – sung by Andre Ethier, it’s like Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen got together to co-write the best song of their careers. A vinyl version of this record featuring seven more songs will see a future release on In The Red records.

5/5
