· Sandro sings!

Sandro Perri’s Polmo Polpo project has long been noted as one of the finer, if somewhat under-appreciated, soundscape artists on Montreal’s Constellation Records roster. Next to the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor it’s difficult to not get lost in the shuffle, yet Perri’s work has continually shone through.

Marking 2006 with the vastly different Glissandro70 and now the long awaited Sandro Perri Plays Polmo Polpo collection of vocal works, Perri’s not only updated his discography so much as entirely transformed its direction with two striking gestures.

Glissandro70’s deep-rooted grooves work as a fantastic update of krautrock, embellished with perfectly sprinkled world music undertones, minus the messy hippy connotations that may imply. Beautifully driven, Glissandro70 welcomes late night examination and experimentation – an intellectual’s summertime record.

Plays Polmo Polpo, on the other hand, is Perri’s heartbreaking work of rainy-day longing. Opening with the raspy reeds of "Romeo Heart (Slight Return)," Perri builds a world of sound layer by layer, hissing towards something truly gorgeous. Rewriting (and in the process completely rewiring) three of the tracks from Polmo Polpo’s wonderful instrumental masterwork Like Hearts Swelling, Perri re-casts himself as one of Canada’s finest voices, his lovely tenor swooning through "Requiem for a Fox" and "Sky Histoire." Joined by subtle horns, Perri composes his finest romance in "Circles," proclaiming, "circles are like love songs/they’re easily drawn wrong."

Proving both his talent and his range, Glissandro70 and Plays Polmo Polpo secure Perri’s place as an auteur in the works.
