Local film scene offers plenty to do

President of Victoria Motion Picture School, Barry Casson, C.S.C, will be offering a free seminar on careers in the film industry. This award-winning filmmaker will tell you "How to Get In and Succeed in the Film Biz" on Thursday November 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Best Western Hospitality Inn (135 Southland Drive S.E.). Quickdraw Animation Society (QAS), EMMEDIA Gallery & Production Society and Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers (CSIF) present GIRAF: Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival. You should go! Featuring the coolest artist talks, screenings and workshops, this festival runs November 3 and 4 at Quickdraw Animation (351 11 Avenue S.W.). The Calgary Public Library hosts its first Buddhist Film Series November 3 to 5 in the John Dutton Theatre at the WR Castell Central Library (616 MacLeod Trail S.E.). Films include Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, I Heart Huckabees and the premiere of Buddha Wild: Monk in a Hut among others, and each screening will be followed by a Dharma discussion led by a Calgary Buddhist Temple Sensei. The Arusha Centre presents the twelfth instalment of their Action Film Series with Black Gold, a documentary about the $80 billion coffee industry. The screening takes place on Wednesday, November 15 at 7 p.m. at the Uptown Screen (612 8 Avenue S.W.). As always, Calgary Dollars are accepted and children and youth under 15 get in for free.

South Asian Visual Arts Collective (SAVAC) is looking for contemporary, independent and innovative short films and videos by artists of South Asian origin from around the world. Documentaries or abstracts – anything goes! Selected works will be screened at the third annual program of international short film and video, titled MONITOR 3 in Toronto, Canada in April 2007. Works must be under 50 minutes, not produced before 2004 and have a South Asian artist in a key creative role. Deadline for submissions is November 30, 2006.
