| Oy vey, anyone else partied out after a night of Halloween happenings? Those spooky songsters in Vailhalen and Ghouls Gone Wild sure had the socks hoppin at the Hifi Club Tuesday night, and Im still reeling from an All Hallows Eve hangover. The show must go on though, so heres your news for November. With the weather turning towards a hazy shade of winter, many local bands seem to be spending time in the studio these days. The first and freshest result of these recording efforts comes in the form of a cookie-coloured seven-inch split, featuring two new songs by Sudden Infant Dance Syndrome (SIDS) and the last track ever laid down by The Incandescence. It should be available at Sloth, Megatunes and Melodiya by the time you read these words. SIDS can be seen next at Broken City on November 10 with The Ostrich and the El Caminos.
Speaking of The Ostrich, theyre another new local band more than worth checking out. The Calgary four-piece play their own brand of no-bullshit rock n roll, with one of the most confrontational live shows this citys seen in a dogs age. Log onto myspace.com/theostrich for a taste, or just take my word for it. Theyre also playing at Soda on November 28.Despite the fact that their drummer Mike Wallace has now moved to India to learn how to play the tabla (yeah, sounds sort of nutty to me, too), it seems that Azeda Booth are gonna keep on kickin out the space jams. Theyre playing an all-ages gig at the Crescent Heights Community Hall on November 4 and are also taking part in a two-day music festival at the Chinese National League on November 24 and 25. Other acts at the festival include the all-new Mico, Anabith Gish, Bank of Canada, Smart Patrol, Tuff Ghosts, Laura Leif and the Lunar Duchesses. The Spiritus Mundi (the lo-fi solo side-project of Wormwood Orchestras Shaun Lee) has also recently recorded his debut EP, Stellar Jay/Bright Midnight. Four tracks from the EP are up at myspace.com/thespiritusmundi and it will also be released on November 6 at The Point on 17th. At the all-acoustic show, The Spiritus Mundi will play alongside The True Blue Rip, The Russian Artist Factory and someone named Duck Soup Eddy. These weirdos all have websites, so search em out.
The Intended are now putting the finishing touches on their new full-length The Fall And Rise of Upside Down Man (Ziggy Stardust reference?). The metal maniacs also have four shows in Calgary this month, at the Stetson on the 7th, Tequila on November 9, The Gate on November 15 and The Point on 17th, on November 17. They take it all too far, but boy can they play guitar. In other metal news, Inner Surge have recently had their 2004 album Matrika reissued by their current label Cyclone (also home to Calgary's Caveat and Wormbox). Visit innersurge.com for info, upcoming shows, music videos, migraines, etc.
Down on the other end of the spectrum, local rappers GQ and King Dylan have released their debut LP Afterlife this month, although the King has already appeared on past releases such as All Eyes on D and Smacked by Popular Demand. My jokes about these goatee-sportin frat-boys might be best left un-typed, but if youre picking up what theyre putting down, the CD release is at The Distillery on November 18.
Axis of Conversation also have a new EP, entitled There's Hope for You Yet (just kidding). According to the band, the CD is being sold only at shows and via direct correspondence for now, though it will soon be available at various independent retailers in Calgary and Edmonton.
Oh, hey, and The Grim Beat (a.k.a. Gina McFadden) have a new demo. Its called Unser Grund fur das Verlassen ist Rupland and its four songs long (two regular and two a cappella), its in a limited run of 150 burned CD-Rs and its totally awesome. Maybe myspace them if you want a copy or something?
In the final piece of news for November, the artists formerly known as Pressure Kill Common Style have decided to change their name. The modish moniker will mark a new era for the band, hopefully gaining them a fresh reinvention and an added sense of strength. The band's new name? THE Pressure Kill Common Style. And they also have a new bassist named Chris Reimer. If youre a local artist doing something interesting and want to have it written about, drop me a line at either alvy411@hotmail.com or myspace.com/alvy411.
