When a band wears Mexican wrestling masks you can expect at least a bit of shtick. Los Straitjackets have spent the bulk of their career pinned to the mat by their own mediocre mid-fi surf. Rock en Español tags them out with the help of a gimmick and gets them flying off the top rope.
With the help of producer Cesar Rosa (Los Lobos) and rockabilly heavyweight Big Sandy, Los Straitjackets deliver 14 rock ’n’ roll classics, as the title suggests, in Spanish. Turning back the clock, Los Straitjackets cover The Kinks ("All Day and All of the Night"), The McCoys ("Hang on Sloopy"), The Coasters ("Poison Ivy") and many more en Español making for a killer rave-up party record. Rock en Español sounds too clean for its own good, but that won’t stop you from wholeheartedly singing along even if you don’t know the language.
